1.
Try May and November - While neither
of these months is the most popular to
visit Caribbean destinations, the
weather is generally great, the rates
are good and the islands are less busy
than in high season.
2. No
puddle jumpers. Depart from the
largest commercial airport near your
city. Sometimes this alone may save you
hundreds of dollars on fares. If you do
not want to drive all night to catch an
early morning flight, there are also
hotels that participate in Park & Fly or
Airport Send-off programs. With the
package you receive one nights hotel
stay, up to two weeks free parking at
the hotel (this varies from 1-2 weeks
determined by the hotel), and free
transport to and from the airport for
your flights. These packages will
generally cost between $50.00 and
$150.00 depending on the hotel.
3.
Fly mid-week instead of weekends.
Flying Monday to Monday is generally the
cheapest. With Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday being the most expensive days of
the week to fly.
4.
Black out the black out dates. Do
not travel during peak times. The
highest numbers of people travel during
this time which in turn drives up the
cost of flights. Most airlines have
blackout dates during these times (dates
at which no discounted fares, travel
miles, and/or coupons may be used). If
you must travel during these times,
research all options available and try
to be as flexible as possible. Try
different dates, departure/arrival
times.
5.
Stay on one airline. Generally the
cheapest flights are where all flight
segments are on the same airline.
Flights with multiple carriers tend to
be more expensive, but this is not
always the case.
6. Be
Flexible. You will usually find that
changing your vacation by a week one way
or the other may yield a lower fare.

Short for "your amazing personal travel assistant," Yapta tracks airfares for specific itineraries, alerts you when prices go down, and, if you've already bought a ticket, helps you get a travel credit or voucher for the difference. (Yapta only sends an alert if the savings are more than the airline's rebooking fees, and claims 19% of purchased flights qualify.)
