With over 100 restaurants on Grand Cayman, ranging from simple jerk chicken stands, pizza and hamburger outlets (no McDonalds, though), to dining rooms featuring five-star haute cuisine, there's a spot for virtually every budget, and every culinary whim. Gourmets won't be disappointed...Needless to say, the following is in no way an attempt to list all restaurants on Grand Cayman (many of which we haven't tried) that are worthy of mention. The few, selected restaurants below are simply those, in various price categories, that have become our favorites over the years; dining spots that we feel offer consistent satisfaction and good value -- considering their pretensions, price, service, and quality of ingredients and food preparation.  There is no particular order to the list below -- and no attempt to rank one against the other. We'll strive to update and extend the list to eventually include every Grand Cayman restaurant that, for one reason or another, is worthy of mention and recommendation.

Blue French doors open out on to the wide deck overlooking Morgans’ Harbour. Soft breezes flow in from the Sound. Views of fishing boats lazing back to their docks, with frigates soaring above, are your accompaniments to leisurely lunches and delightful dinners. This is the Calypso Grill experience out in West Bay and what a charming and delicious experience it is.

The color schemes are bold red, bold blues and burnt orange throughout with shuttered window seats along the main dining room and French Doors along the sea – kept ajar to capture the ever present breeze. By day the sun fills the room, the water sparkles and the play of colors equals the splendor of the outdoors. By night Calypso Grill enjoys the most comfortable and cozy feeling on the island.

Chef George Fowler, “the Heart” of the restaurant, is aided by his excellent kitchen staff in producing consistently delightful menus. The fresh fish comes in daily from the next door dock and is prepared grilled, blackened or sautéed. There are specials daily with additional selections of Tuna Sashimi, Marinated Conch, Sautéed Calamari, Crab Cakes, Mussels, and Fresh Shrimp, to name a few. For those more “Turf” orientated , Fillet of Beef , Rack of Lamb, and a Bistro Style Sirloin are available. Desserts are wonderful with the Chefs’ “Sticky Toffee Pudding” famous on the island.

Calypso Grill is located in the West Bay countryside with its raucous parrots, roosters and the odd cow's. Lunches are from 11:30 to 3:00 and Dinners start at 6:00 pm.

Right downtown on the water

Rackam’s Waterfront Bar and Grill has been a favorite hangout for both locals and tourists for many years. It’s the place where you sit at the bar with a dive master on one side and an accountant on the other, all enjoying the same thing... world famous fish and chips, ice cold beers, signature cocktails and of course our entertaining ,gorgeous and friendly staff.

Rackam’s is literally built right on the iron shore, jutting into the sea, so you can’t get any closer to being on the water, and can’t beat the views.

You can snorkel off our ladder during the day to enjoy the wreck of the Cali, or swim with the tarpons, stay for an incredible sunset, then watch or participate in the feeding of the tarpon, every night at 7:30.

Our lounge area at the top called CBLU is perfect for chilling in the evenings on comfy couches and chairs, offering full food and drink menus, chilled music, and an unbeatable

Roland's Garden- Roland is a former restaurant chef who runs an outdoor (campy) "cafe" at his house in the Cottage District, on the Southeast coast of the island between the Lighthouse and east end. Not well-marked- but you will see about 10 tables in the trees behind an anchor chain fence along the road--about 1.5 miles East of the Frank Sound road intersection at the bottom of the island.  He is right across the street from the pastel-colored homes on the seaside called "Seacliffs". You arrive at his place where you are greeted by his dog (Alex), Roland tells you about dinner tonight, if you decide to stay for his 5 course dinner (bring your own beer/wine in a cooler) you will be pleasantly surprised...after dinner you pay him what you feel the meal was worth. No menu, no bill. It sounds hokey, but true. I have eaten with Roland many times. I seem to average about US$40/person (cash only) and he is very happy with that. His food is plentiful and very good. You MUST make a reservation at least a day or two in advance (I would suggest before you leave for the island) 926-7670. That is Roland in the middle of the photo on left. In summer, bring a can of bug spray- just in case there is no breeze. http://www.chefroland.com/

Vivine's Kitchen- In the East End; Miss Vivine's house is the backdrop for her charming restaurant on the water in East End. Cool breezes rustle the sea grape trees around you, large sea birds dive into the water fishing for sprats right in front of you and though it is rustic the place is truly a delight. The food is as authentic Caymanian as it comes and her ingredients - fresh fish, conch, whelks, lobster and turtle are all sourced locally. 947-7435 (Lunch and Dinner Daily)

Top-notch, Northern Italian cuisine with a Caribbean flair, and a broad and interesting wine selection, expertly served in your choice of two large rooms (one with superb macaws and parrots, the other overlooking the lagoon) or on their screened, outdoor terrace. Pappagallo is situated in Barkers (West Bay), at the extreme northern tip of Grand Cayman.. But the restaurant's location, in a bird sanctuary beside a natural lake, like its thatched roof, is what makes dining here an exotic experience.

The Reef Grill at the Royal Palms boasts original, expertly-prepared cuisine, both for appetizers and main courses, as well as top-notch service and a very extensive wine list. Excellent fish dishes (like their renowned sea bass), lamb and steak, and a couple of delicious pasta dishes --and the daily specials are always worth a try. A delicious and intriguing appetizer is the roasted garlic with black olive tapenade and flavored oils. Try for a table on the casual, outdoor garden terrace, right on Seven Mile Beach and seperated from the Caribbean by the Royal Palms beach bar -- a good spot for live music and dancing, and belonging to the same owners as the restaurant.

The only authentic Thai cuisine available on
Grand Cayman, and probably the best oriental restaurant on the island, is located in the Queen's Court Shopping Plaza (at the beginning of Seven Mile Beach). The Bagkok chefs prepare regular Thai and vegetarian dishes for both lunch and dinner, served in a pleasantly exotic decor. A bit pricey if you opt for a variety of dishes, but affordable if you each order an appetizer, and share two main dishes. Very good chicken satay skewers to start, and the Phad Thai noodle dish (with shrimps or vegetarian) is excellent. No smoking permitted.

The Brasserie restaurant, well hidden in
Cricket Square (George Town), is a sleeper. In spite of the French name, the menu is eclectic, ranging from Italian pasta, to Mediterranean dishes, oriental-style specials, classics like rack of lamb, and even Spanish tapas. However difficult to categorize, the cuisine at The Brasserie is probably the most imaginative on Grand Cayman. Serving lunch and dinner, the best bet here for a pleasant surprise is always the daily dinner specials. No culinary sampling of the island is complete without at least one visit. The tasteful "plantation" decor is a pleasant visual surprise, as well.

Also located in Galleria Plaza, across from Seven Mile Beach, PD's (Pirates Den) has more of a "bar" atmosphere, than one of a family reatuarant, and is ideal for singles, couples and groups of friends. Popular and well-stocked bar featuring a broad range of beers, excellent Bloody Caesars, but limited choice of wine. You can also rent Internet time on a couple of computers. Extensive and reasonably-priced menu with breakfast, loads of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and a number of "home-style" meals. Try the spinach salad and the "poutine" , a snack specialty from Québec that may sound like a weird mish-mash (fries and melted cheddar, covered with BBQ gravy), but is delicious "junk food" (one order is plenty for two). And, there's a great Sunday brunch at CI$10!

DJ’s Cantina, with its excellent food and enchanting atmosphere, completely satisfies our need for Mexican fare on
Grand Cayman. It's situated in Coconut Place, across from Seven Mile Beach. Your meal begins with a complimentary plate of tortilla chips -- thin and crispy, and the best we’ve ever had -- and salsa. Aside from the many complete dishes offered on the new menu (ranging in price from CI$9.95 to $20.95, you can also choose from the à la carte list, and "build your own plate". For example, you can have a chicken tostado (CI$3.00) and a beef taco (CI$3.00), plus a side of guacamole (CI$1.25) and rice (CI$1.75) for a total of just CI$9.00. Although it’s not on the sea, eating outside on the terrace to the sound of a nearby croaking Cayman frog makes the experience very exotic! Service is efficient and courteous and the prices are right.

Pizzeria Vesuvio is in Regency Court, across from
Seven Mile Beach. It's small, with about ten tables inside, and a couple out front and offers excellent pizza -- probably the best on Grand Cayman -- and very inexpensive dining. There's a short, but good, wine list at excellent prices, eight listed styles of pizza in three different diameters and about eighteen optional toppings -- not to mention very good, bread baked on the premises. Among the seven appetizers, the bruschetta (CI$3.95) and Mozzarella Fritta (CI$5.25) are excellent, and both the Caesar salad (CI$5.25) and the insalata Vesuvio (CI$4.25) are delicious and generous in size. There's also a choice of sandwiches, pasta dishes, desserts, and more. If you're not too hungry, two can share a 10" Margherita and a Caesar salad for CI$16, plus gratuity. Only one abomination: the optional mushrooms as a pizza topping are canned, and just don't jive with the fresh taste of the pizzas. Vesuvio is still one of our favourites -- with the Margherita our usual main dish!

Eats, in the Falls Shopping Centre (opposite the Westin Hotel), consists of a more family-oriented room and a "bar"-type room, and offers take-out, good breakfasts and lunches, as well as reasonably priced dinners. Very popular for snacks, sandwiches, burgers and a range of full meals. No cole slaw but, if you're into avoiding meat, try the tasty, oriental-style, vegetarian stirfry, served in small or large portions.

A laid-back, fun spot that's a favourite with local "ex-pats", The Blue Parrot Bar & Café, open for lunch and dinner, is located at Coconut Harbour on South Church Street (just east of George Town, towards South Sound). Pretty good drinks, snacks and meals at reasonable prices, completely outdoors and on the sea. Lots of "finger-food", sandwiches, vegetarian fare, and full meals, served while you watch (in the evenings) a video projected onto a huge, neighbouring Texaco gas reservoir -- like being at a drive-in movie! There's also a special buffet almost every evening of the week (6:30-9:00pm), including a curry night, Mexican night, a BBQ ribs and jerk chicken night, a prime rib night, and a Sunday "carvery".

Very good and affordable chicken, roasted fresh in a tropical wood rotisserie, right in the front window. Chicken!Chicken!, in the
West Shore Center, across from Seven Mile Beach, also offers a large selection of vegetables and salads as side dishes. Apparently, much better for your health than southern-fried chicken, with substantially less fat. Eat in or take out, you can buy just the chicken (quarter, half or whole), or a full meal, with corn bread and choice of two sides. A tempting, fast-food option!

Probably the best dining value on
Grand Cayman -- located in  Bodden Town. Very tasty jerk chicken or pork. A quarter chicken (leg and thigh), complete with rice and beans, spicy sauce and a slice of white bread, for only CI$4.00! If you prefer white meat, you'll have to order a half chicken. A nice time, if you eat on their "outdoor terrace" (a picnic table under a tree).

If you want to "go native", Mrs. Woods' jerk stand is a must!
