With over 100 restaurants on Grand
Cayman, ranging from simple jerk chicken stands, pizza and hamburger outlets (no
McDonalds, though), to dining rooms featuring five-star haute cuisine, there's a
spot for virtually every budget, and every culinary whim. Gourmets won't be
disappointed...Needless to say, the following is in no way an attempt to list all restaurants
on Grand Cayman (many of which we haven't tried) that are worthy of mention. The
few, selected restaurants below are simply those, in various price categories,
that have become our favorites over the years; dining spots that we feel
offer consistent satisfaction and good value -- considering their pretensions,
price, service, and quality of ingredients and food preparation. There is no particular order to the list below
-- and no attempt to rank one against the other. We'll strive to update and
extend the list to eventually include every Grand Cayman restaurant that, for
one reason or another, is worthy of mention and recommendation.

Blue French doors open out on to
the wide deck overlooking Morgans’ Harbour. Soft breezes flow in from the Sound.
Views of fishing boats lazing back to their docks, with frigates soaring above,
are your accompaniments to leisurely lunches and delightful dinners. This is the
Calypso Grill experience out in West Bay and what a charming and delicious
experience it is.
The color schemes
are bold red,
bold blues
and burnt orange
throughout with
shuttered window seats along the main dining room and French Doors along the sea
– kept ajar to capture the ever present breeze. By day the sun fills the room,
the water sparkles and the play of colors equals the splendor of the outdoors.
By night Calypso Grill enjoys the most comfortable and cozy feeling on the
island.
Chef George
Fowler, “the Heart” of the restaurant, is aided by his excellent
kitchen staff in producing consistently delightful menus. The fresh fish comes
in daily from the next door dock and is prepared grilled, blackened or sautéed.
There are specials daily with additional selections of Tuna Sashimi, Marinated
Conch, Sautéed Calamari, Crab Cakes, Mussels, and Fresh Shrimp, to name a few.
For those more “Turf” orientated , Fillet of Beef , Rack of Lamb, and a Bistro
Style Sirloin are available. Desserts are wonderful with the Chefs’ “Sticky
Toffee Pudding” famous on the island.
Calypso Grill is located in the West Bay
countryside with its raucous parrots, roosters and the odd cow's. Lunches are from
11:30 to 3:00 and Dinners start at 6:00 pm.
Located on the waterfront in North Side, and just
about 5 minutes from Cayman Kai, Rum Point, this lively and informal beachfront
restaurant and bar serves good and reasonably priced Caribbean and Cayman fare.
Known for delicious fish dishes, Over the Edge is open for breakfast, lunch and
dinner, offers take-out meals and a seaside terrace. The dinner menu
offers some of the best daily caught fishe on the Island.
For a taste of Australia with a Caribbean twist,

Roland's Garden- Roland is a
former restaurant chef who runs an outdoor (campy) "cafe" at his house in the
Cottage District, on the Southeast coast of the island between the Lighthouse
and east end. Not well-marked- but you will see about 10 tables in the trees
behind an anchor chain fence along the road--about 1.5 miles East of the Frank
Sound road intersection at the bottom of the island. He is right across the
street from the pastel-colored homes on the seaside called "Seacliffs". You
arrive at his place where you are greeted by his dog (Alex), Roland tells you
about dinner tonight, if you decide to stay for his 5 course dinner (bring your
own beer/wine in a cooler) you will be pleasantly surprised...after dinner you
pay him what you feel the meal was worth. No menu, no bill. It sounds hokey, but
true. I have eaten with Roland many times. I seem to average about US$40/person
(cash only) and he is very happy with that. His food is plentiful and very good.
You MUST make a reservation at least a day or two in advance (I would suggest
before you leave for the island) 926-7670.That is Roland in the
middle of the photo on left. In summer, bring a can of bug spray- just in case
there is no breeze.

Vivine's Kitchen- In the
East End; Miss Vivine's house is the backdrop for her charming restaurant on the
water in East End. Cool breezes rustle the sea grape trees around you, large sea
birds dive into the water fishing for sprats right in front of you and though it
is rustic the place is truly a delight. The food is as authentic Caymanian as it
comes and her ingredients - fresh fish, conch, whelks, lobster and turtle are
all sourced locally. 947-7435 (Lunch and Dinner Daily)

Top-notch, Northern Italian cuisine with a

The only authentic Thai cuisine available on
Grand Cayman, and probably the best oriental restaurant on the island, is
located in the Queen's Court Shopping Plaza (at the beginning of Seven
Mile Beach). The Bagkok chefs prepare regular Thai and vegetarian dishes for
both lunch and dinner, served in a pleasantly exotic decor. A bit pricey if you
opt for a variety of dishes, but affordable if you each order an appetizer, and
share two main dishes. Very good chicken satay skewers to start, and the Phad

permitted.

The Brasserie restaurant, well hidden in
Cricket Square (George

from Italian pasta, to Mediterranean dishes, oriental-style specials, classics

cuisine at The Brasserie is probably the most imaginative on Grand Cayman.

the daily dinner specials. No culinary sampling of the island is complete

featuring a broad range of beers, excellent Bloody Caesars, but limited choice
of wine. You can also rent Internet time on a couple of computers. Extensive and
reasonably-priced menu with breakfast, loads of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers

DJ’s Cantina, with its excellent food and enchanting atmosphere, completely
satisfies our need for Mexican fare on
Grand Cayman. It's situated in Coconut Place,

thin and crispy, and the best we’ve ever had -- and salsa. Aside from the many
complete dishes offered on the new menu (ranging in price from CI$9.95

Pizzeria Vesuvio is in Regency Court, across from
Seven Mile Beach. It's small, with about ten tables inside, and a couple out
front and offers excellent pizza -- probably the best on Grand Cayman
-- and very inexpensive dining. There's a short, but good, wine list at
excellent prices, eight listed styles of pizza in three different diameters and
about eighteen optional toppings -- not to mention very good, bread baked on the
premises. Among the seven appetizers, the bruschetta (CI$3.95) and Mozzarella Fritta (CI$5.25) are excellent, and both
the Caesar salad (CI$5.25)
and the insalata Vesuvio (CI$4.25)
are delicious and generous in size. There's also a choice of sandwiches, pasta
dishes, desserts, and more. If you're not too hungry, two can share a 10" Margherita and a Caesar
salad for CI$16,
plus gratuity. Only one abomination: the optional mushrooms as a pizza topping
are canned, and just don't jive with the fresh taste of the pizzas. Vesuvio is
still one of our favourites -- with the Margherita our usual main dish!
Eats, in the Falls Shopping Centre (opposite the Westin Hotel), consists of a
more family-oriented room and a "bar"-type room, and offers take-out, good
breakfasts and lunches, as well as reasonably priced dinners. Very popular for
snacks, sandwiches, burgers and a range of full meals. No cole slaw but, if
you're into avoiding meat, try the tasty, oriental-style, vegetarian stirfry,
served in small or large portions.
